September 27th, 2009 marked yet another milestone in Danny Gokey’s blossoming music career. Hundreds gathered at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York to witness his first solo concert. My “Idol” partner-in-crime, Nicole, and I had the pleasure of being among the many devoted Gokey fans that day, and after driving four hours from Philadelphia we were hoping the trek would be worth it.

The show began around 7:30 and as Danny took the stage, the roar of the crowd grew. He immediately went into "PYT," which only sealed the deafening sound of the screams coming from us. His set took us through a ‘journey’ of his life, as he put it. He took a step into the oldies genre with “Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg” and of course dipped into some Latin to spice things up. A favorite from the “Idol” tour, “Maria Maria,” was included, as was another Santana hit, “Smooth”. Finally, Danny was sure to balance out the show with a few soulful ballads that really showcased his outstanding vocal ability.

The soulful, four-eyed crooner’s stage presence was taken to another level with these performances. The man I saw before me wasn’t some rookie from Milwaukee or an "Idol" wannabe. As every person in the audience chanted his name you could just feel the magic that lit up the room with his charisma. The way he delivers each lyric, how he carries every melody line, there’s something breathtaking about it all. I found myself numerous times just simply staring at him. I mean not only is he one ridiculously good-looking guy, but he’s a captivating performer. I love that he paints a picture before each song. He loves to talk about how the song is relevant in his own life and how much the words have touched him. (In fact, Nicole and I have decided that if his music career doesn’t work out, which it will, we would have him pinned as a motivational speaker). He makes you want to go out there and be a better person; do some good in the world. It’s refreshing that he can mesh good music with a declaration of hope and I think that’s what I love most about him.

Following the show, Danny came out to the lobby to talk with fans, take pictures and sign autographs. He was just as personable as I remembered him being the first time I met him in Atlantic City. When it was your turn, you were well awa re of it as you had his undivided attention!

All in all, his first solo concert was a complete success. With this show now behind him, Danny is hitting the album pretty hard this week. “If you haven’t heard I was signed to RCA Nashville…Tuesday I go into the studio to start my album. I’ll be laying down five tracks in two days…My producer, well I can’t name him right now, but I can say he produced Carrie Underwood’s album. All of her albums actually…Expect the single sometime in November,” Danny told us. Great things are on the horizon for the third place finalist and I, for one, will be counting down the days until his next career milestone!
